Better Relationships, Better Outcomes

Join Katie Thornton (RN, MSN, CNL) and Vincent Pham (PhD) for an interactive discussion about how to lead your team towards equity-based outcomes and improved results for your clients/customers. The first session in our 5-week Navigating the Intersections series, “Better Relationships, Better Outcomes” will guide participants in exploring:

  • How equity work must start within our teams before it will impact our “clients”

  • How coded workplace language causes racialized harm and how to stop it

  • Steps can we each take to positively transform our teams and workplace cultures

When starting equity work within organizations we often focus our attention on improving the “customer” experience, but what if we focused on Us instead? Creating improved experiences for your customers, whether they are patients, students, community partners, or consumers, is difficult. Organizational leaders focus on outcomes, engagement, finances and marketing, which are all important elements for running a successful program; and despite our best efforts we still see inequities within the work.

Through interactive conversations, Katie and Vincent will discuss effective strategies for improving employee dynamics and relationships that have led to improved experiences of cultural responsiveness by our patients and students. We will review lessons learned through successful implementation of this strategy and its measurable outcomes, and honestly describe the barriers we faced and how we navigated them. Finally, participants will identify next steps they can take to support the evolution of their own workplace culture.

Katie and Vincent have learned similar lessons while navigating different sectors of the workforce. Katie entered into equity work through her career as a Master’s educated RN running community-based healthcare teams for the past 14 years. Vincent’s commitment to equity began in college, continued in academic research, and into institutional and organizational settings of higher education over the past 20 years. By partnering together, Vincent and Katie intend to create a space for leaders within any sector to discuss the realities of making sustainable change to diversity, equity and inclusion, and to find hope in developing a potential pathway forward for your organization.
